Professional Summary

Dr. Norman Lee Johnson is a distinguished researcher with expertise in a wide range of disciplines, including Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Collective Intelligence, Diversity, and technical areas of Transport Phenomena. He earned his Ph.D. in Polymer Physics – Rheology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983, and his career has been marked by significant contributions to various multidisciplinary projects.

Dr. Johnson’s leadership skills were evident early in his career as a PostDoc at Los Alamos, where he initiated and successfully completed numerous multidisciplinary, multi-institutional projects. Many of these projects received awards for their outstanding achievements, with some recognized as the most successful in their respective institutions.

He led or supported many national and international efforts to reduce intentional or naturally occurring threats. For chemical and biological threat, he served as Co-Chair on a National Academy of Science committee with Dr. David Franz, former Commander of the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID).  To manage pandemics, he served on a treaty delegation and led a technical team to aid U.S. cities in employing advanced epidemiological simulation resources. To minimize discrimination and improve performance in large organizations, he educated managers on how to better employ diversity in their organizations.  His approach to serving the nation and the public involves developing system-wide and sustainable solutions that integrate the best approaches from diverse stakeholders.

His technical research spans diverse areas, from the origin of consciousness in AI systems to data-driven cybersecurity, quantitative risk assessment methods, agent-based modeling, numerical methods in fluid dynamics, and more. In addition to his physics-related research, he has explored mechanisms of performance and situational awareness in collective systems and models for behavior and decision-making in emergent, bottom-up processes.

Dr. Johnson is not only a leading researcher but also a sought-after public speaker, emphasizing the importance of diversity in governments, universities, financial markets, and cultures. He is actively involved in community service and currently serves as an officer on two nonprofit boards in New Mexico.
